In the co-featured bout, former middleweight champion David Lemieux scored a fourth-round stoppage over Glen Tapia in a fight stopped by the corner after a knockdown.
Lemieux (35-3, 32 KO) didn’t show any lingering effects from a one-sided knockout loss against unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin last October. His punches were sharp and crisp, and he became the first to knock down Tapia, one of the sport’s bravest fighters.
The knockdown came on a right hand near the ropes in the fourth round. Tapia beat the count and didn’t appear badly hurt when his corner jumped on the apron to stop the contest. He protested but had taken some significant punishment.
On the undercard, Frankie Gomez turned in a career-best performance to win a shutout unanimous decision from the usually tricky former world champ Mauricio Herrera.
All three judges scored the contest 100-90 for Gomez.
Gomez (21-0, 13 KO) dominated every round of the fight. He attacked Herrera to the body and ripped him with big uppercuts that opened a cut under his left eye and left his face battered and bruised.
It was an impressive performance from a young fighter who has a ton of promise but who has seen his career sidetracked by issues with weight and out-of-ring problems.
In the opening contest, Curtis Stevens reinvigorated his career with a minor upset of previously unbeaten prospect Patrick Teixeira via second-round stoppage.
Stevens (28-5, 21 KO) hurt Teixeira (26-1, 22 KO) with a left jab in the opening frame and put him down and out with a hard counter right hand in the second round that forced referee Tony Weeks to stop the fight
